About the opportunity The Green Waste Recycle Yard in is seeking an experienced Sawmill Operator for our cutting and woodworking operation.
The ideal person for this job is someone who loves all things related to lumber (the look, smell, feel, etc.), plans to continue in this industry long-term, and has a solid understanding of timber quality and the machinery used in a sawmill operation.
Reporting to the Green Waste Recycle Yard’s Sales & Operations Manager, this newly developed role reflects the increased demand for the specialty products we create from logs delivered from our parent company, the Professional Tree Care Co.

Since 1980, The Professional Tree Care Company has been trusted for tree services throughout Northern California. Based in Berkeley, CA, we service commercial, residential, and public works projects from Mendocino to Monterey, and from San Francisco to Sacramento.
What makes us unique? We recycle 100% of material removed from job sites at our own Green Waste Recycle Yard, custom mill logs and create organic mulch – and soon, electricity - from the wood chips. We also have the staff, equipment, resources, and experience to perform tree services at any scale.

Must be able to: - Operate a variety of sawmill equipment to cut logs into board and timber
- Collaborate with team members to create inventories of logs, supplies, dimensional lumber, special wood projects, and other materials
- Work with your team to create accurate project schedules, delivery dates, routine safety and maintenance schedules, and other routine systems that create an efficient mill operation
- Feed and remove logs from sawmill
- Sort, sticker, and stack cut lumber after processing by size and type
- Walk through pre-use safety checks on sawmills, tools, and other equipment
- Perform routine maintenance checks and repairs on a variety of machinery
- Prepare orders to be shipping and delivery
- Drive a company vehicle, and by physically able to climb into the back of the truck to load and unload and/or deliver products
- Work outdoors year-round in direct sun and/or inclement weather. You’ll be on your feet much of the day and will need to move lumber that weighs +/-100 pounds from time to time
- Ensure that safety protocols and procedures are followed
- Use a pneumatic firewood chopper, chop, bundle, and stack firewood
- Be available to work overtime when notified in advance of a project deadline
- Other tasks as requested by your team
Requirements: - Experience as a Sawmill Operator or similar role in the lumber industry
- Strong understanding of timber quality, species, and uses for each type
- Familiar with sawmill machinery or equipment
- Able to routinely lift 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds
- Be in good physical condition with enough stamina to perform physical tasks for up to 8 hours per day, mostly while standing, walking, or carrying lumber. (Yes, a physical exam is required.)
- Able to drive a forklift, use a chainsaw and other tools related to cutting, sanding, preparing lumber
- Having basic math skills for accurate measurement and calculation of timber
- Current and clean CA Driver’s License
- Able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
- Must live within a 45-minute commute of the Green Waste Recycle Yard (see website for details)
Bonus points for: - Having 2+ years of experience
- Being bi-lingual English/Spanish
- Having experience with a wood kiln
- Having a positive, can-do attitude
- Having a demonstrated history of using personal protective equipment
Compensation and Benefits
This is a full-time, year-round position with a starting hourly rate of between $26.00 and $30.00 per hour, depending on your relevant work experience, fit for the role, and fit to our company culture. The position comes with competitive benefits including:
